Not a day goes by where I don’t find myself asking the question, “Are people really this stupid?” It certainly doesn’t help that I share an office with a complete dipshit, but unfortunately I’ve seen this stupidity popping up for years. So here comes a fun fact ladies, and I’m sorry if this shatters your dreams: You are NOT models because you run out and get professional pictures taken. If you’re a model, people pay YOU for the pictures. If you’re paying for pictures, you’re an ASPIRING model; it’s not the other way around. Seems like a very simple concept to me, yet it seems like everywhere I turn there’s another delusional egomaniac that is trying to show the world their latest “modeling pictures.”
So I came into work this morning, and this monster that I share my office with is showing my manager a bundle of pictures. Knowing almost immediately that I wanted to avoid whatever they were involved in, I put my head down and tried to quickly move past them. Of course I was grabbed by my co-worker, who wanted me to take a look at her “latest modeling pictures.” Now, annoying or not, I have no problem stating whether someone is attractive or not, but holy shit, this girl literally looks like an amalgamation of Snuffleupagus and Miss Piggy. She’s one of those uppity Seattle snobs that’s a 4, but has the attitude of a 10. If you’ve ever been to this area, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
I was then handed a stack of pictures, that God only knows how much she paid for, that looked like a Jim Henson photo shoot taken straight out of Fraggle Rock. I literally couldn’t believe what I was looking at. I know it was rude, and I was definitely getting the stink-eye from my manager, but I turned to my co-worker and asked her, “so where are these appearing?” She of course asked what I meant… “Well, you said they’re modeling pictures, what are you modeling for?” In which she responded, “Oh, just for my friends on Facebook.” Of course being the nice guy that I am, I couldn’t just bite my tongue and had to state, “Oh, so you just went out and got professional pictures taken, I figured since you called them modeling pictures that you had gotten paid for them.”
After escaping the awkward tension cloud that I had created, I had to deal with hours’ worth of my manager sending me instant messages laughing and telling me how classic the look on my co-workers face was, all while my co-worker is posturing and telling me how she really is a model, and people have offered to pay her for her pictures, although she has chosen not to sell them because the price just hasn’t been right yet. Ugh… just another day at work.
Regardless, women… enough with the narcissism epidemic sweeping through your gender. You’re not all models! If you’re not getting paid for your image, you are just getting pictures taken of yourself. Plain and simple.
